Abstract

Limited public knowledge of local biological potential highlights the need for concise, contextual, and accessible science education media. This study developed and formatively evaluated a QR Code-based booklet on the antibacterial activity of walikukun leaves (Schoutenia ovata Korth.) for community science education. An adapted ADDIE framework was used through analysis, design, development, and formative evaluation; the study did not proceed to full-scale implementation. The needs analysis involved 56 respondents, and the prototype was validated by three material experts and three media experts. A formative readability and initial effectiveness trial involved 30 community members using a one-group pretest-posttest design. Data were analyzed descriptively and with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and effect size. Results showed that 64.3% of respondents were unfamiliar with walikukun and its leaf benefits, while 91.1% were unfamiliar with pathogenic bacteria; all respondents supported booklet development. Expert validation indicated very high feasibility for material (94.5%) and media (91.8%), and user readability and response reached 95.5%. Mean knowledge scores increased from 1.93 to 4.00 (Z = -4.300, p < 0.001, r = 0.785). The booklet was therefore highly feasible and readable and showed promising initial effectiveness in a formative community trial.
